3 reasons why passive houses are the future

Passive houses are the future. I know, that's a pretty bold statement, but I'm not just saying it because I think so, there are facts to back me up. As of today, in the Passivhaus Institute's database there are 5,228 buildings built or rehabilitated under the Passivhaus standard worldwide. Of these, 254 buildings are located in Spain.

The interesting thing is that the construction of this type of housing has been growing by an average of 34% per year since 2009, when the first Passivhaus certified house was built in Spain. Surely these three reasons that I explain below will have a lot to do with this growth trend.

Reason 1: They meet increasingly demanding energy efficiency requirements.

Since 2013, when Spain began to require all buildings to have an energy rating, energy efficiency laws have been tightened.

A firm step towards more efficient and nearly zero-energy buildings was taken this year with the entry into force of Law 7/2021 on climate change and energy transition, and Royal Decree 390/2021 updating the basic procedure for the certification of the energy performance of buildings.

In this context, Passivhaus buildings not only meet, but exceed these high demands and guarantee that you will be covered in this respect for many decades to come.

Reason 2: Its low energy demand can easily be met by renewable energies.

The latent need to reduce CO2 emissions is causing a major shift in the energy sector, which is increasingly relying on renewable energies.

Buildings made to the Passivhaus standard consume between 75% and 90% less energy than a conventional building. This low demand means that it can be very easily supplied by a renewable energy source.

This means that with your Passivhaus house you are ready to make this energy transition, whether or not a renewable energy source is required in every home in the future.

You can find out more about the relationship between Passivhaus and renewable energy in this link.

Reason 3: Banks are already betting on this type of construction.

It is not only the energy sector that has its sights set on sustainable sources, the financial sector is also investing in financing projects that ensure sustainability.

This is where the so-called green mortgages come in. These mortgages "reward" the purchase, construction or renovation of a sustainable home with a reduced interest rate, and are mostly based on the energy rating to grant them.

As Passivhaus exceed the legal requirements for energy efficiency, you can be sure that you will get the highest rating and therefore the best conditions for your mortgage.

So, if you are thinking of building a new house right now, I urge you to build it with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind, otherwise I can assure you that it will be an obsolete house from day one of its construction.

With the Passivhaus standard you are covered in every way to cope with the change we are experiencing, a change that requires us to move towards more environmentally friendly options without compromising on comfort.
